The ancient Vedic culture in India, has given Humanity the best system to follow. It is only our ignorance which is taking us away from it. In this blogpost, I would like to quote simple culture, yet scientific, which was followed in every household, from ages, in India.

Our sages ( I refer them as Scientists with Philosophical background ), milleniums ago, knew about all the metals, their characteristics and their significance in maintaining good health of human body. In ancient times it was known that metals and their alloys had not only the material value, but also healing and energetic properties. Metals were used to treat and prevent various diseases. Let me point out one-by-one, why and how these metals were introduced in the society for use and its purpose.

1. Let me start with the kitchen. Utensils were made up of Copper or Brass or Iron. Brass is an alloy of Copper and Zinc. The primary role of such elements is as a catalyst, and only trace amounts are necessary for cellular function. These metals are widely found in nature, particularly in various mineral deposits and soils, meaning that they are available to be taken up by plants and animals that serve as food sources for humans. In brief, I would explain the significance of these metals in human body :

Iron is an essential constituent of haemoglobin, myoglobin and a number of enzymes. Iron is stored in body tissues to supply body needs. However, deficiency may occur from inadequate dietary intake or blood loss which results in anaemia and loss of well-being. Deficiency in infants and young children increases susceptibility to infection and impairment of growth. Serving / Stirring spoons and some vessels were made up of this metal.

Zinc is a constituent of over 300 enzymes involved in numerous body functions, including enzymes involved in gene expression. Deficiency impairs cell growth and repair of tissue injury.

Copper is also essential for numerous enzymes and is a constituent of hair and of elastic tissue contained in skin, bone and other body organs. There are a number of important copper-containing proteins and enzymes, some of which are essential for the proper utilization of iron. Dietary deficiency is rare, but does occur in certain acquired or hereditary disorders that impair intestinal absorption. Some food used to be cooked in Brass utensils which would absorb Copper and Zinc from the containers.

Because of these essential properties, food in Indian kitchen would be rich with metallic content. Another reason for having utensils made of these metals is because, they cannot be consumed or easily soluble in human blood. Therefore, food cooked in utensils of these metals get ionized and enter the human body in traces as a solvent.

In the modern era, aluminium was introduced to the kitchen, which has less medicinal values. Later steel entered the cooking set with almost nil significance to human health. Today, plastic has replaced all metallic utensils in the kitchen so called “Modern” which has negetive impact on human health.

2. Ornaments are metallic. Most of the jewellry of an Indian women is Gold or Silver. Applying metal plates to different parts of the body that correspond to active points to improve health and heal people.

Gold is a highly reactive metal has unique healing properties. It is capable of attracting heat to the body, which is important when the body produces insufficient amount of energy. It is preferable to have old gold items of round shape. For example, family gold jewelry passed on from generation to generation have an ability to accumulate energy potential. Therefore, it is highly undesirable to part with them. It is also believed that wearing a gold ring on a finger of the right hand extends life for a few years.

Modern scientists proved that this metal has a positive effect on the mood, invigorates and inspires confidence in the future. In addition, its sunny and bright glow, shows a beneficial effect during seasonal depression.Silver : Women love to decorate themselves with various trinkets of silver, but not everyone knows that this metal is excellent doctor. For example, decorations on the neck calm the nerves. And if you wear silver on the ring finger of right or left hand - it removes excessive energy in blood circulation and reduces blood pressure. A ring on the index finger of both right and left hand normalizes the work of gastrointestinal tract. For heart invigoration, it is recommended to constantly wear a silver ring on the little finger of the left hand.

You can read more about why women should wear more jewellry in my another blog “Visiting Temples Improves Health”.

I hope, this much of Science about usage of metals is sufficient for us to understand and follow our traditional methods. This will not just improve our health conditions, but takes care of our future generations and also the entire Society for us to live in.

I found an interesting video on some findings, that highlights the richness of our culture and knowledge :
